July 2: Sojoy (Portsmouth, NH)

Sojoy is a chord-less little big band modern jazz septet built around composer, arranger and drummer Jonny Peiffer.

A "merry band of joyful noise creationists." "Proving that great music still exists even as new traditions are being forged." - Chris Hislop, Portsmouth Herald

"Tightly arranged and swinging like a modern version of John Kirbys Sextet of the 30s." "Utterly charming!" - Jazz Weekly

"The album (The Adventures of Oliver Z. Wanderkook) stands alone as a piece of art ... they maintain their memorable beauty and convey a story all their own.” - Austin Sorette, The Sound

Sojoy is packed with some of the most talented players and improvisors on the Seacoast scene. Jonny Peiffer is also the founder and a principal member of the Afro-beat orchestra Shango. He is musical director for such projects as Desert Island Live! which brings full studio albums to the live stage. He is an active member of the abstract expressionist art and music collaborative In Ears 'N' Eyes. Zach Lange can be found playing with the Soggy Po Boys, Mother Superior and Sliding Royals, and Shango, among other groups. Josh Gagnon is finishing up his undergrad at UNH and destined for greatness! Matt Langley is a founding member of the improv funk and groove band Color, he is in many of Matt Jenson's groups like Combo Sabroso, leads his own groups like Sound Playground, and is co-founder of In Ears 'N' Eyes, among many other things. He can also be found playing in Mother Superior and the Sliding Royals, and Shango. Eric Klaxton can be found playing in groups like the Soggy Po Boys and Shango, among others. Nick Mainella also performs in Our Big Band (lead by Chris Klaxton) as well as creating his own infectious beats as a DJ. Scott Kiefner is a young and in demand sideman on the scene. Everyone wants him and we're glad to have him.
