MEET MEG
I am the librarian at the grade 3-5 Fisher Mitchell School in Bath and the owner/operator of Embark Maine Tours. Embark Maine Tours offers guided walking tours of historic Bath - the City of Ships! Our flagship downtown tour is a chronological look at the history of Bath - stories brought to life in the places where they happened. We also offer a neighborhood tour, focusing on the Washington Street Historic District, a Women’s History Tour and an Oak Grove Cemetery Tour. We partnered with some local boat captains to launch a combo boat/walking tour this year for small private groups to have the “full Intro to Bath” in town and out on the Kennebec River. Folks can buy tickets on our website or book a private tour at a time/date of their choosing! I’ve even done some “car tours” for folks with mobility limitation.
How did you get started?
The first thing I did when I came up with the idea of offering guided walking tours of Bath was reach out to folks at the Bath Historical Society, the Patten Free Library, Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc., Main Street Bath and others. I introduced myself, asked questions, and got feedback on the idea. There are so many people and organizations who have worked long and hard to preserve our city and its history, I wanted their advice and buy-in. I spent many hours in the History Room at Patten Free Library, researching and developing the content for the tour. On the business side, I met with a small business advisor at Coastal Enterprises, Inc. (CEI) and joined an incredible online community, Tourpreneur, for ongoing PD and support.
Passions + Hobbies
I like to cook and eat good food, swim anywhere, stay up on current events, read good books, hang out with friends, and go for hikes or rides on boats, exploring our beautiful state.
Fun Fact: Before we moved from Washington, DC to Bath, my husband and I spent two years traveling cross country in a restored Airstream - in the middle I spent a summer as a U.S. Park Ranger in Vermont - cool hat and everything!
Why do you use Union + Co?
First, it is such an incredibly beautiful and inspiring space. And, the floor to ceiling windows looking out on my beloved downtown Bath are a physical reminder that I am part of (and hopefully contributing to) a wonderful community. With a full time job, my own business, two board positions, one other significant side gig and other volunteer commitments, I love having a dedicated focused space to tackle my to-do list, all while being able to pop out and patronize local businesses for that quick coffee, ingredients for the evening’s dinner, or hold a quick 1:1 about an upcoming event or collab.
