MEET MANDY

I am interested in the intersection of small business, real estate, and building a resilient economy. I love historic downtown buildings. Short, tall, beautiful, the architecturally pleasing ones, and particularly, the tiny ones endearingly called “little chunks.”  Their history. The history of the people who once occupied them. The impact they have always had on people and the community.  The way they look and feel.  The potential they hold for changing and shaping the future - for individuals, small businesses and the communities they serve. My real estate profession gives me the opportunity to help people find, manage, and sell their commercial and residential real estate. For me, it’s more than a transaction. My goal is to form a partnership with my clients during and throughout the process. Small businesses are the backbone of our state and small towns. There is nothing more gratifying than helping a business find a space where they can grow and thrive.

How did you get started?

I have a liberal arts degree. Very liberal arts. I focused on the history of science and enjoyed research. Out of college, I got a job with a UK-based non-profit that provided Environmental, Social, and Governance-related (ESG) research to asset managers and institutional investors on publicly traded companies. I focused on oil & gas, chemicals, and real estate investment trusts, then I moved to human-rights related research, first researching companies operating in Sudan, and on to another project focusing on occupied territories including Crimea and Palestine. While it was good work, I was focused internationally. I was missing the feeling of being connected to my own community. I found Build Maine - an organization working to bring good urban design, planning & zoning, and real estate development principles to Maine via an annual conference. I was introduced to urban planning and real estate and was hooked.

Fun Fact: Captain of my college rugby team and I have four sisters.

Why do you use Union + Co?

As a co-founder and operations manager of Union + Co, I have had the opportunity to start and grow a small business from the ground up.  As Union + Co has grown, so have I - sometimes catching up, along the way.  It has been a fairly short and steep learning curve, but I can’t imagine another experience that could have taught me so much, given me so much, and been so fulfilling and rewarding.
